Water with care. Over-watering kills more houseplants than anything else. But give too little water and the roots will desiccate. The only remedy for an over-watered plant is to stand it in a light airy position and hope it will dry out fairly soon.

Plants in small pots, and those with hairy leaves should be watered from below. Top watering using a watering can with a narrow spout suits most plants. After watering, drain out excess water. Do not allow the pot to stand in a saucer of water.

Watering depends on many factors such as :

- Time of the year
During winter when most plants are semi dormant, they require less water. During summer as growth is more rapid watering is increased.

- The position in the home
Plants in a dark place require considerably less water than if they are in a position with enough light.

- Variety of the Plant
Fleshy leaved plants like cacti and succulents need far less water. Thin leaved plants require more.

- Temperature in the room
As the temperature rises the plants absorbs more water. An even temperature is ideal. Never water plants in full sun as splashed leaves may become scorched.

As clay pots are porous, plants growing in them will require more water than similar plants growing in plastic pots. While watering fill the pot up to the rim and allow excess water to drain out.

Regular feeding is essential for good results. Underfeeding makes the plants weak. Overfeeding can cause the roots to scorch. Slow release fertilizers, Liquid fertilizers and any organic fertilizer is ideal. No feeding is required during winter, light feeding can be commenced throughout summer.

Plants prefer moisture in the air. The higher the temperature the higher the humidity the plants require. One easy way to increase the humidity is to place the plant in moist peat. This raises the moisture and keeps air moist between the leaves.

Verieagated plants like good light, but not too much direct sunlight. Green leaves like more shade, and can be placed in darker positions. Plants grow towards the light so it is advisable to turn their pots regularly to encourage balanced growth. Most plants thrive on moderate to bright light. Only few plants like cacti and succulents can tolerate scorching sun.

It is of vital importance. Plants sponged regularly will thrive and look more healthy. This can be done with a soft damp cloth or with a soft brush.

Depending on the type of plant it can be kept outside once a week or fortnightly. Plants can be placed in the balcony for 2-3 days for more air and light. Once removed from indoors, plants should be placed in shade and not in direct sunlight, otherwise the leaves may burn.

The best time is in summer or the rainy season. In ideal growing conditions plants can be repotted anytime of the year.
